More Information about Anke Birnie:
The bronze sculptures created by artist Anke Birnie combine natural earthly elements such as "air " with human "motion". Her pieces allow the observer to feel the resistance of the dancers into the wind. Confidence, grace and beauty radiate from every sculpture as long, powerful arms and legs climb up ropes, while others listen, talk or dance in a sea of swirling clothes. A combination of power and fragility come to light as if the outside world, for example, a strong Autumn wind which sends skirts billowing, are taken in their stride by the proud, graceful character of the sculptures.
Standing figures in suspended in still motion, framed by one or more people, characterize Anke Birnie’s early works. The torsos come across as a renewed interpretation of the classical sculptures from antiquity. Anke Birnie experimented with a wide range of materials and techniques and her line-up includes an impressive series of aluminium sculptures. Recently, Anke Birnie’s focus has moved onto relationship between the sculpture and its surroundings; exemplified by her innovative positioning of her bronze sculptures on long, hanging wires. This positioning accentuates the figures presence and ensures additional uniqueness depending on the place or context in which sculpture is positioned.
Anke Birnie obtained her Masters in Art at Artibus College in Utrecht (Netherlands), where she specialised in sculpting techniques. Visiting international exhibitions of major sculptors sparked her interest and fascination for the aesthetics and craftsmanship involved in sculpting. The influence of great masters can be sensed including that of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti (1901 -1966) and his contemporary Germain Richier (1904 -1959). With this background Anke Birnie has developed her own unique, creative expression. Today, art works by Anke Birnie are enjoyed by many art connoisseurs around the world both in private and corporate collections.
