Bert Brus is a Dutch painter. Born in 1964 in the Netherlands he started painting and drawing when he was very young. Actually, he never stopped doing this until the present day! As a student in chemistry he even sold his work. These pen drawings helped him to pay the bills as a student. He is a master in several techniques; watercolor, etching, pen drawing, but oil painting is where Brus focuses on mainly nowadays.
Bert Brus uses images from daily life. Like the Surrealists painting from dream analysis, Bert Brus uses the images coming to him just before dropping off to sleep. This period of complete relaxation offers a perfect opportunity to wonder about the beauty and humor of our daily life.
“Dreams originate in reality, the images I use, summarize my reality”.
Brus is a big fan of the Dutch ‘Old Masters’. The directness in the paintings by Johannes Vermeer keep on inspiring him for instance. The works of Brus are hard to be put into a single category. But if one has to choose, then his work would fit between Realism, Magical Realism and Surrealism. Brus himself is not a big enthousiast of these classifications. He calls his work therefore ‘Almost Realistic’. And that is where the dream theme comes in again. Because are our dreams not like that? Almost Realistic?
Brus does a very good job in convincing us that we are looking at a perfect normal situation, but still something feels off. Is the reality we perceive the same reality as Brus sees? It doesn’t really matter. Reality is not the goal of Brus, it is the departure of his work. The results are contemporary pieces of art, vividly colored and all containing a certain sense of humor.
